Is it hot in here, or is it just me?

Jonas at the table yesterday, while eating:

"I'm having a hot flash" (wipes hand across forehead).

Ian: Where did you hear that phrase?

Jonas: Nonna.

He was kind of sweaty.

Ups and Downs

Most of the time these days Jonas is moving so fast it is hard to see him...

Until he comes up for air, that is.

He does have more reflective, quiet activities, as well. His artwork has become much more clearly representational (translation, "we stand a better chance of recongizing what it is"). Here is his owl, make entirely without adult input. These shots aren't perfectly clear, but if you look closely you can see big eyes, horns on top (great horned owl being the favorite species), a beak between the eyes, and stubby little wings on the sides.

Unfortunately, asthma still rears its ugly head at times. Recently a cold got him it its talons, and after a couple of nights of coughing until he threw up, we hit upon the right combination of meds and sleeping position. He slept on my chest, while we sat up on the couch. Not my best recommendation for cuddle time with a little one, but we non-breastfeeding parents have to take what we can get :-)

Dr. Gina guessed "croup", and a few steamy showers later, he was back in action. This started out to be a chopper motorcycle, but got co-opted part way through into being an ultralight...

Do or do not -- there is no try

Soooo

If there ever was a kid event worthy of a photo-ridden blog, it would be trick or treating :-)

Mark and Ilana were kind enough to host the event, even so close upon the heels of Liza's arrival!

It was an excellent neighborhood for trick or treating, with many other kids out, and cheerful people at the doors. The only scary moment was when our little Yoda ran into Darth Vader. We discovered that he had not generalized his experience of "kid in costume" to all the other characters on the street.

Finally, it was time to return to the Beigels' to count the loot. The kids were just old enough to enjoy the bounty, but not old enough to hoard (which meant that the parents could share in the haul!)...

One life's bibliography

As we turn the corner next to our house recently...

S: There is the house of that Lab that used to chase Tokay.
J: Is a Lab a cat?
S: No, it's a dog.
(pause)
J: Has it gone on to a happy place?
(big pause. Parents look at each other in front seat)
S: What do you mean?
J: Is it no longer alive?
S: No honey, it's probably still alive. It just doesn't chase Tokay anymore. Where did you hear that phrase?
J: Nona. About Bailey.
(Bailey died months ago, if not a year or more.)
